The Education of Millionaires: It’s Not What You Think and It’s Not Too Late
is hands down one of the best business/marketing/self-improvement books of 2011. Following in The 4-Hour Workweek’s
tradition of rising above the status quo, The Education of Millionaires is a perception and all over life changing book that will never leave you the same.
The main idea behind the book is that you don’t need a formal, college education to become successful in life. In fact, you actually might be doing yourself a disservice by going the traditional route of spending 4 years of your new-found adult freedom, taking out massive student loans and foregoing other career opportunities, just to find yourself fighting tooth and nail over entry-level positions in a field not even related to your major. And that’s if you’re lucky! I know too many people who have gone the traditional route only to find jobs that they hate would’ve got out of high school, so I know this idea is not too far-fetched.
The author (Micheal Ellsberg) makes a clear distinction between formal education and self-education, which can be defined as learning the skills that are necessary and valuable in the real world, skills employers and potential clients actually care about. If you’ve been following New School Success for a while, you already know we’re a HUGE supporter of self-education vs. formal education (having gone both routes). So, The Education of Millionaire struck a chord with me, as if it was confirming everything I’ve been thinking since I began to pursue higher education.
The Education of Millionaires
tells exactly how it is in the world today: mainly how having a degree does not necessarily equate to job security anymore in today’s economy, which is rampant with outsourcing, offshoring, downsizing and flat-out bankruptcy. You basically have to make yourself valuable to your employer and/or clients to keep a job or business going and formal education is just not cutting it anymore. So, it’s up to YOU to self-educate and stand out in today’s crowded and not to mention, global marketplace. Thankfully, The Education of Millionaires gives you a blueprint on just how to go about it, all while providing plenty of real world examples of people who have made it by going against the grain and blazing their own path to success.
Some of the topics covered in the book are why sales and marketing are vital to any business (actually more important than your product or service), the art of networking, bootstrapping and self branding and last, but definitely not least, how your mindset determines everything.
Not only is The Education of Millionaires a good read, it’s also entertaining and has the capability to change your life, that is if you actually take the information to heart. It’s not another one of those stuffy, theoretical based business books that will put you to sleep just by looking at the cover, but one with real world examples and advice that pertains to today. #HighlyRecommended
